“Are you sure Sam’s meeting us here?”

“That’s what he said.” When Holly had called the lawyer and asked about her auction lot, he’d agreed to meet them at the plantation that afternoon. The police had finished their search and were happy to release all the items to the new owners. But there was no sign of the lawyer, and he was already thirty minutes late.

“Lawyers. Can’t trust them.” Harry launched off Holly’s shoulder.

Holly jabbed a finger into the air. “While you’re up there, scout around. See if you can spot anything suspicious.”

“Like what, banshee? It’s an abandoned plantation. Everything’s suspicious.”

“An ancient Viking burial mound would be a great thing for starters. Should be right up your alley.”

Harry cawed a mocking laugh and flew over the house, heading to the side of the plantation.

“I take it he’s searching for graves too?” Xandie swung her hands around. “Kind of like a needle in a haystack. It’s not like the plantation’s been loved in a while.”

Her cousin wasn’t wrong. It’d been a long while since a gardener had attacked the overgrown foliage. “Do your best. At least it’s still daylight. Which means you go left, I go right.”

“When did you become a brave hunter of clues?”

Holly poked her tongue out. “When I realized the sooner we solve this, the sooner we get back home. And I’ll never complain about Point Muse mayhem again.”

“Believe it when I see it. Let’s set our watches. Ten minutes and we meet back on the front porch.”

Holly nodded to Xandie, then headed around the right side of the large house. She had the feeling the plantation was the key. There was something here that needed uncovering. She swiped at the overgrown trees that attacked her head. “If something drops on me, I reserve the right to screech like a scream queen.” It was tough to see anything remotely like an ancient Viking burial mound in this Louisiana jungle. She peered at the tangle of bushes and trees in front of her. Anything or anyone could be hiding. As the thought crossed her mind, a dark shadow darted out from a bunch of bushes, straight at Holly. Before she had time to scream and alert Xandie, the shadow knocked her to the ground. Winded, Holly rolled to her side, gasping for breath.

Harry screeched from above, his caw like the sound of fingernails-on-a-blackboard. He gathered his body into a black missile and dove for the shadow. “Not my banshee, miscreant. No harm shall come to her under my watch. Feel the fury of my talons.” Harry dropped and swiped at the shadow as the person flung his arms up.

The shadow ducked behind a tree and the cover of bushes.

Harry hovered protectively over Holly as a splutter of a car engine backfiring then roaring off into the distance sounded.

Holly finally managed to heave in a breath. “I am never leaving Point Muse again.”

“Yeah. I hate travelling. Always gives me motion sickness.”

“You’re a stuffed bird and you can fly. How is that possible?”

“You’d be surprised what horrors an upset witch can dream up when she curses you.
